Santiago Bernabeu was a Spanish football player and manager who is best known for his time as president of Real Madrid from 1945 to 1978. He was born on 8 June 1895 in Almansa, Albacete, Castilla-La Mancha, Spain. Bernabeu began his football career as a player for Real Madrid in 1912. He was part of the team that won the Spanish Cup in 1917 and the Spanish League in 1920. He retired from playing in 1927 and became a coach for Real Madrid in 1931. He was the manager of the team that won the Spanish League in 1932 and 1933. In 1945, Bernabeu was elected president of Real Madrid and held the position until 1978. During his time as president, he oversaw the construction of the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, which is now the home of Real Madrid. He also helped to establish the European Cup, which is now known as the UEFA Champions League. Bernabeu was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Order of Sports Merit in 1971 and the Grand Cross of the Order of Civil Merit in 1975. He died on 2 June 1978 in Madrid, Spain.
