Marcus Mumford is an English and American singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer. He is the lead singer, guitarist, and drummer of rock band Mumford & Sons.
Marcus was born in Yorba Linda, Orange, California, the son of Eleanor M. W. (Weir-Breen) and John A. Mumford. His parents were leaders in the neocharismatic evangelical Vineyard Churches. In an interview, Marcus said that his family is “all English.” While both of Marcus’ parents were from England, his maternal grandfather was Scottish. His family moved back to England when Marcus was six months old, and he was raised in Wimbledon Chase, southwest London. Marcus is married to actress Carey Mulligan, with whom he has three children.
Marcus’ maternal grandfather was James Johnstone Weir Breen (the son of William Weir Breen and Crichton Jane Isabel Pryde). James was Scottish, born in Glasgow, Scotland. The surname Breen is usually Irish.
Marcus’ maternal grandmother was named Mary Barrow-Williams. Mary’s surname might indicate Welsh ancestry.
