Lawrence Kasdan is an American screenwriter, director, and producer. He is best known for writing the screenplays for the Star Wars films The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983), as well as Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). He has also directed several films, including The Big Chill (1983), Silverado (1985), Grand Canyon (1991), and Wyatt Earp (1994). Kasdan was born in Miami, Florida, and raised in West Virginia. He attended the University of Michigan, where he studied film and literature. After graduating, he moved to Los Angeles, where he began writing screenplays. His first major success was the screenplay for The Empire Strikes Back. Kasdan has been nominated for three Academy Awards, for Best Original Screenplay for The Big Chill and Grand Canyon, and for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Accidental Tourist. He has also been nominated for two Golden Globe Awards, for Best Screenplay for The Big Chill and Grand Canyon. Kasdan has been married to Meg Kasdan since 1972. They have two children, Jonathan and Jessie.
