“In the 1980s and 1990s, the East Village was a crazy area,” says iO, who is known for his project Self-Evident Truths, in which he is shooting 10,000 people (including Lily-Rose Depp) who identify somewhere on the LGBTQ spectrum.

After Darling Days was published, iO came out as transgender to celebrate his genuine self. In an interview, he stated that he believes there should be numerous labels for genders so that individuals may identify with their spot on the spectrum, and that there should always be the option to modify it as needed.

However, in the particular book, Wright’s pronouns are still referred to as ‘she’ but later that changed as iO liked being called out as a man. This is what he thinks should be normalized.
